Digital Coloring: TMNT

Since Frank is letting his 80’s nostalgia flow, I decided to post this digital coloring I did of none of than the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I have a Deviant Art account in which I post some of my personal art and projects. I don’t keep it updated often (mainly since the DA community can be ridiculously creepy at times), but luckily some truly talented artists post new artwork very often. That includes comic book style artists, some who even have worked for DC and Marvel comics.

While glancing around DA one day, I stumbled across a collaborative piece between user CreatureSink and inker Ray Trent. Beautiful black line art of the 4 turtles in heroic poses just begging for color!

I downloaded the high resolution line art and set to work, using the techniques that I have learned over the years with digital coloring and challenged myself to follow the same process an actual comic book color artist would use.

The whole thing took about 6 hours in Photoshop over the course of a few days.

I have to say, the finished product turned out quite nicely, but most of that credit goes to the original artists who created such an interesting and detailed composition.

I’ve always toyed with the idea of becoming a digital color artist. However, I know my true desire is to just make things visually appealing, if not stunning. So I’m happy with working mainly in graphic design, where I get to put my talents to the test every day. But, when I’m free, I still like to dabble in other artistic mediums.
